In 2014, the report of the “review on antimicrobial resistance”, a body headed by Jim O’Neill, estimated that without actions, 10 million people a year could die due to drug-resistant infections . If this figure has been recently disputed , the emergence and spread of antibacterial agents is according to WHO an “increasingly serious threat to global public health that requires action across all government sectors and society.”The MOOC “Resistance to antibacterial agents” addresses the major public health problem of the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria isolates, which are responsible for an increase in the morbidity and mortality of a wide range of infections caused by bacteria.In this course, we intend to provide the basic knowledge regarding the resistance to antibacterial agents.The MOOC is divided in 6 chapters and 29 lessons, in which we will address key questions in the field. The first chapter presents the antibacterial agents and their use for animals and humans (1); the second describes the current epidemiological situation of antibiotic resistance across the globe (2); the third explains how the resistance is detected in the medical laboratories; the fourth one presents the origin of antibiotic resistance, its dissemination; the fifth chapter proposes concepts to control its spread while the sixth chapter highlights the alternatives to antibiotics, the last molecules actually available and novels molecules in progress.
